BYD has officially unveiled the new Dolphin G DM-i, a plug-in hybrid hatchback developed specifically for the European market.

The model marks an important shift in the Chinese automaker’s strategy, which until now had focused primarily on fully electric vehicles in the region.

According to the manufacturer, the Dolphin G combines an internal combustion engine with electric propulsion using BYD’s DM-i hybrid technology. The company promises a combined driving range of more than 1,000 kilometers, allowing for fully electric urban driving as well as long-distance travel without concerns about frequent charging.

The hatchback measures approximately 4.16 meters in length and was designed to compete with popular compact models in Europe such as the Renault Clio, Toyota Yaris, and Volkswagen Polo. Unlike the fully electric Dolphin already sold in several countries, the new Dolphin G features a more understated design and a redesigned front end to accommodate the hybrid powertrain.

BYD has not yet released all technical specifications, but more details are expected before the vehicle’s official European launch, scheduled for June. Deliveries are expected to begin in the second half of 2026.

The arrival of the Dolphin G comes at a time when several automakers are reassessing the pace of the full transition to electric vehicles in Europe. As a result, plug-in hybrids have gained momentum as an intermediate solution for consumers who remain concerned about charging infrastructure.
